In order for your Faustian Bargain project to be considered "on time" you must dropbox your script before the beginning of class AND hand in your memory stick/flash drive at the beginning of class.

We will begin reading Act I on Friday. Any edition is fine as long as it is the full play and not some newfangled adaptation or abridged version.

First, remember that you can donate your boughten copy of Doctor Faustus to the school for ten extra credit points. Make sure your name is on the inside cover and turn it in to me along with your exam today.

For Wednesday, April 1 (A3) / Thursday, April 2 (B1) -- Faustian Bargain
In order for your Faustian Bargain project to be considered "on time" you must print out your script before the beginning of class AND personally hand to me your media on a memory stick/flash drive, etc.

Important: Please make sure that your media WORKS in finished format before you give it to me. If it does not work when I try to run it, you will receive a late grade. We will be viewing and critiquing all projects when we return from Easter Break.

Macbeth Is Next
The next play we'll be studying is Shakespeare's Macbeth. I will not be handing out any hardcopies of Macbeth, so you may either read the PDF available on the website or (recommended) get your own copy of it in book form. We will begin reading Act I on Thursday. I still have copies available for $5. See me.

The Faustus unit exam is next class. I will collect your four LRJ entries and your completed data sheet for grading at that time.

In order to prepare for the unit exam, I recommend that you download the study sheet below and review how to prepare a passage analysis.

As part of your preparation for the unit exam, you will be completing a data sheet for Doctor Faustus. Print it out and bring it to class on the day of the exam. (Note: This will also be helpful when preparing to take the A.P. exam.)

One-act play/film -- March 31/April 1
Just a reminder: Your media and your play/film script is due to me at the beginning of class on March 31/April 1. Media should be on a flash drive. Do not email me anything. Flash drives will be returned to you. We will view all projects during a subsequent class.

Next play: Macbeth
Beginning next week, we will be reading and studying Shakespeare's Macbeth. Although I have a PDF of the play available from this website, I encourage you to obtain your own copy. You may be interested in the No Fear Shakespeare edition, which gives the original text (which we will be studying) on one side of the page and a modern translation on the opposite page. I have a number of those available for purchase for $5. See me.

Your one-act play/film synopsis is due today. Each group will be making a presentation in class. Final media, including film script, is due on March 31/April 1.

IN CLASS WORK: 
Doctor Faustus Passage Analysis Assignment
You will choose one passage from Doctor Faustus (in any Act) and proceed with the passage analysis exercise.

For next class: Tues/Wed.
You will be reading an excerpt from Oscar Wilde's play The Importance of Being Earnest and completing an explication worksheet and LRJ prompt #4. This is due next class. Be sure to drop-box the explication worksheet before class begins on Wednesday.

First, a reminder that you are required to purchase your own copy of Christopher Marlowe's The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus (the Signet Classics edition edited by Sylvan Barnet) by Tuesday/Wednesday. I still have a dozen or so used copies in near perfect condition available for $5. If you are interested, see me. Bring to class on Tuesday/Wednesday.

For Tuesday/Wednesday: Intro to Drama
We will begin our study of drama as literature with The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus. followed by Shakespeare's Macbeth. Be sure to check out all the resources and materials at the Dr. Faustus page on this website. You have a brief reading assignment for Wednesday on the following download:

Introduction to Drama as Literature + Intro to Marlowe & the Faustian Bargain (DOCX)

You will need to know the answers to the following questions:
1. What are Aristotle's elements of drama? Be able to identify and explain them.
2. What are the modern "elements of drama"? Ditto
3. What are the three types of dramatic monologues?
4. In what ways do Shakespeare's tragedies differ from Greek tragedy?
5. Identify and explain the seven tips on how to read a play
6. What is a Faustian bargain? Be sure you can identify all three parts of it.


IRP Book Choices -- due Thursday/Friday
Remember to come to class on Thursday or Friday with the title and author of three books you would like to read for your IRP project. I will do my best to assign you one of those -- so be ready to rank them according to your interest.

Preparing for the unit exam

You will have your Canterbury Tales unit exam on Friday/Monday. In order to prepare for the exam you will be completing a study worksheet. Very important: make sure you are familiar with all the allusions from the Allusions List below.


Please note: You will NOT be permitted to use any materials on the unit exam. You will not be permitted to use a book on the exam. However, if you would like to donate your copy of CT to the school, please bring it in on Monday for extra credit (10 points). Warning: This will be a challenging exam. Know the tales well.
