11/24/2014

Today you will be taking the unit exam for Brave New World and Our Posthuman Future. You are required to bring your BNW data sheet to the exam. You may use your data sheet and on the exam. No books will be allowed.

Update: The A3 exam has been rescheduled for Monday, December 1 (due to the power outage early release).

If you are absent today, you are required to take the make-up exam after school on Wednesday, December 3. You should bring your data sheet with you at that time.

I will be collecting the Brave New World books issued by the school as well as BNW and OPF book donations (for 10 points extra credit each) on Monday when we return from Thanksgiving break.

Required Reading for December 2(B)/3(A)
When we return from break we will begin reading George Orwell's 1984. In order to prepare for that, you are required to read the following introductory information. Please be ready to take a quiz on this material. Practice close reading and annotation in order to prepare:

DOWNLOAD: An Introduction to Nineteen-Eighty-Four (PDF)

Dystopian Narrative Project
Your short story is due on the day we return from T-giving Break: December 1/2. In case you need a reminder about what this assignment is, please see the assignment sheet below. Print out and turn in at beginning of class.

DOWNLOAD: Dystopia / Utopia Short Story Assignment

For more information on 1984, please see the 1984 unit page on this website.

1984 Reading schedule
Be aware of the reading schedule so that you can best budget your time:
    December 4 (B) / December 5 (A) -- Volume One
    December 10 (B) / December 11 (A) -- Volume Two
    December 12 (B) / December 17 (A) -- Volume Three

I strongly suggest that you begin reading 1984 over Thanksgiving Break! You may check a book out from me, buy a book from me ($5), get your own book, or download the PDF from the 1984 page.

The Unit Exam will be the semester exam on December 16 (B1) and December 19 (A3)

(S1C31) Brave New World Data Sheet

11/20/2014

Due today: Take-home quiz on Chapters 11-18. Be ready to turn your hardcopy in to me at the beginning of class.

Next class (Monday): You will be taking your unit exam for Brave New World & Our Posthuman Future. In order to be best prepared for this exam, please download and study the following study guide:

DOWNLOAD: Unit Exam Study Guide -- BNW & Our Posthuman Future unit (PDF)

Reminder: Your LRJ prompts (1-4) for Brave New World are due at the beginning of class on Monday. I will collect these for grading.

Today's In-class Assignment (Thur/Fri): You will be completing a "data sheet" for Brave New World. The data sheet is an organizer, a place for you to record your impressions and questions as you are reading, and it becomes a prompt for literary analysis. The data sheet, which amounts to a dense four pages, requires you to look up information on the author of the work and the period in which it was written; identify the characteristics of the genre; analyze key passages; identify and explain literary techniques, metaphors, and themes; and anticipate AP-style questions.

BTW. You will complete a data sheet for each full-length work that we study during the
rest of the year. This is a great way to prepare for and review for unit exams and the A.P. exam.

DOWNLOAD: Blank data sheet for Brave New World (DOC)
DOWNLOAD: Sample data sheet completed for Jane Eyre (DOC)

Download and complete the data sheet for Brave New World. Type your responses in 7 point Courier New and drop-box your progress at the end of class. You should have -- at minimum -- completed the first and second pages (out of four). You will finish the data sheet at home, print it out, and bring it to the exam. You may use it on the exam and you must turn it in with the exam.

Cutting the Gordian Knot -- Allusion of the Day (10)

11/17/2014

Picture
—According to legend, Gordius was a Greek king.  He tied an extremely complex knot, and an oracle prophesied that whoever untied it would rule all of Asia.
—
—Alexander the Great “untied” the knot simply by cutting through it with a sword.

—A “Gordian Knot” is any extremely complex problem, and “cutting the Gordian Knot” refers to solving such a problem in a quick decisive manner.
—
—Example: Each year the school counselors face the Gordian knot of scheduling classes.
—
—Example: The councilwoman cut the Gordian knot so that two worthy programs would not have to be cut.  Cutting both programs budgets prevented from having to eliminate one or the other.

Today we'll be discussing the dystopian society of Brave New World from the exposition given in Chapters 1-3 of the novel.

Be sure to explore the Brave New World page on this website. Click the link above -- or use the link on any of the non-blog pages. This includes important background information, the articles you are required to read for the LRJ responses this unit.

This is a particularly helpful download:
BNW -- Glossary of Terms Used in the Novel (DOCX)

Notice the important BNW words and phrases in the collage to the left: "Community, Identity, Stability" and "In Ford We Trust." Be able to explain those.

For Friday's/Monday's class
We will have a quiz and discussion over Chapters 4-6 of BNW and you should have completed LRJ#1 and LRJ#2 (Mindless Entertainment) before the beginning of class.

Betrayed With a Kiss -- Allusion of the Day (9)

11/9/2014

PictureThe Kiss of Judas by Carvaggio
—In the Gospels, Judas Iscariot was the disciple who agreed to betray Jesus to the authorities in exchange for payment. The thirty pieces of silver were the price of Judas’s betrayal. The way Judas identified Jesus for the authorities was to approach and greet him with a kiss of identification.
--
“Thirty pieces of silver” refers to payment received for an act of treachery.

—“Betrayed with a kiss” refers to a supposed friend’s treachery.

Example: Patrick Henry warned his listeners about the supposed friendliness of the British.  He warned, “Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss.”

Example: When the senator abruptly changed his vote to support the wealthy developer’s project, some of his colleagues muttered that he would probably receive his thirty pieces of silver from the developer.
