(S1C35) Big Ideas, Propaganda & 1984

12/2/2015

The Media Matrix: Propaganda & Mass Media

The first documentary is required. Since we may not have time in class, you should watch this documentary in its entirety -- from home (flipped classroom!). Consult your Worksheet (above) in order to understand what you should take away from this documentary.

North Korean propaganda on Western propaganda

This second documentary is from the perspective of North Korea on Western propaganda. The film, which could be considered propaganda itself, does address some common propaganda techniques used by western countries, including sloganeering and "globalization." We will likely not have time to watch this one in class. You should watch the first 38 minutes of it at home using the Youtube link given below. Of course, you will need to take some of the material presented with a grain of salt! After all, it's the North Koreans.

12/2/2014

Important note: From now until the end of the quarter the new blog entry will appear on B-days. If you are in the A3 class, this will require you to refer to the previous blog post the night/day before each of your classes.

Reminders:
1. Your "dystopian narrative" is due today. It must be printed out (double-spaced) and ready to turn in at the beginning of class.

2. Please bring your Brave New World and Our Posthuman Future books to class for collection. If you donate your personal copies (they must be in good condition!), you will receive 10 extra credit points per book. School-issued hardbacks will also be collected today.

Introduction to the 1984 unit
During our study of 1984, we will have three seminar classes, one on each "volume." Each of you will be assigned to a group/section for this unit. Each group will be responsible for leading the seminar discussion on one assigned volume. (You can see which group you've been assigned down below). Those of you not in that presentation group will prepare a passage analysis for the seminar discussion that day.

Thus, during this unit, you will be completing two passage analyses and one discussion group assignment. This will replace the daily reading comprehension quizzes. You will need to download the following two assignment sheets, which provide full details of each assignment.

    DOWNLOAD: Passage Analysis Assignment (PDF)
DOWNLOAD: Seminar Discussion Groups Assignment (PDF)

LRJ Assignments for 1984
You will have four LRJ prompts to respond to during this unit. I am not going to give you individual due dates for each one. They will all be due for collection on the date of the unit exam: December 16 (B1) and December 19 (A3). Some of these assignments require you to read an accompanying article, all of which can be found on the 1984 unit page.

    DOWNLOAD: 1984 LRJ Prompts (PDF)

Today in class
You have already read the "Introduction to George Orwell's 1984." You will be working in your newly assigned groups in order to prepare a brief presentation on three questions and one term pertaining to the introductory material. You will have 20 minutes to prepare your responses, and then each group will be presenting. You will need to take notes on your eWorksheet quiz when other groups present. You will drop-box the completed sheet at the end of class today.
