11/24/2014

Today you will be taking the unit exam for Brave New World and Our Posthuman Future. You are required to bring your BNW data sheet to the exam. You may use your data sheet and on the exam. No books will be allowed.

Update: The A3 exam has been rescheduled for Monday, December 1 (due to the power outage early release).

If you are absent today, you are required to take the make-up exam after school on Wednesday, December 3. You should bring your data sheet with you at that time.

I will be collecting the Brave New World books issued by the school as well as BNW and OPF book donations (for 10 points extra credit each) on Monday when we return from Thanksgiving break.

Required Reading for December 2(B)/3(A)
When we return from break we will begin reading George Orwell's 1984. In order to prepare for that, you are required to read the following introductory information. Please be ready to take a quiz on this material. Practice close reading and annotation in order to prepare:

DOWNLOAD: An Introduction to Nineteen-Eighty-Four (PDF)

Dystopian Narrative Project
Your short story is due on the day we return from T-giving Break: December 1/2. In case you need a reminder about what this assignment is, please see the assignment sheet below. Print out and turn in at beginning of class.

DOWNLOAD: Dystopia / Utopia Short Story Assignment

For more information on 1984, please see the 1984 unit page on this website.

1984 Reading schedule
Be aware of the reading schedule so that you can best budget your time:
    December 4 (B) / December 5 (A) -- Volume One
    December 10 (B) / December 11 (A) -- Volume Two
    December 12 (B) / December 17 (A) -- Volume Three

I strongly suggest that you begin reading 1984 over Thanksgiving Break! You may check a book out from me, buy a book from me ($5), get your own book, or download the PDF from the 1984 page.

The Unit Exam will be the semester exam on December 16 (B1) and December 19 (A3)

Picture
Today we'll be discussing the dystopian society of Brave New World from the exposition given in Chapters 1-3 of the novel.

Be sure to explore the Brave New World page on this website. Click the link above -- or use the link on any of the non-blog pages. This includes important background information, the articles you are required to read for the LRJ responses this unit.

This is a particularly helpful download:
BNW -- Glossary of Terms Used in the Novel (DOCX)

Notice the important BNW words and phrases in the collage to the left: "Community, Identity, Stability" and "In Ford We Trust." Be able to explain those.

For Friday's/Monday's class
We will have a quiz and discussion over Chapters 4-6 of BNW and you should have completed LRJ#1 and LRJ#2 (Mindless Entertainment) before the beginning of class.

The Dystopian Narrative
You will have a creative writing assignment this quarter. You will be writing a short story set in a dystopia of your own design.

DOWNLOAD: Dystopia / Utopia Short Story Assignment (PDF)

This assignment is due on December 1/December 2. Please make a note of it.

DOWNLOAD: Introduction to Brave New World (PowerPoint)

If we have time, we'll also be working on something called "The Dystopian Chain Gang" in class today. If not...

For next class (Wed./Thu.)
Read Chapters 1-3 and be prepared for a quiz
     - Prepare two analytical questions based on the reading, for class discussion
Complete LRJ #1 on Mood-Altering Drugs & Happiness

DOWNLOAD: Brave New World LRJ prompts (PDF)

N.B. Although I will not collect and grade the LRJ assignments until the date of the unit exam, you are required to complete these prompts when assigned. We will be discussing each of these LRJ assignments and the articles included. Do not be surprised to find questions regarding the LRJ assignments on the daily BNW quizzes.

How our schedule (now) looks

5/6/2013

I'm making some changes to the end-of-the-year schedule. These changes will soon be reflected on NetMoeller as well:

Monday, May 6th
Brave New World -- Chapters 11-18 quiz
Reviewing multiple choice strategies for AP exam
(If you miss this class, you may make up the quiz during class on Friday.)

Wednesday, May 8
Review for AP exam -- essay strategies
Note: Although I highly recommend that you prepare three data sheets for the exam, I am not going to make this a requirement for you to turn in today as I previously planned.

Friday, May 10
Final LRJ assignments #1-4 are due today.
I am cancelling the Brave New World unit exam. You all have enough AP exams this week and next without having to sit yet another exam.
Today will be the "Movie of the Year" presentation

Tuesday, May 14
For A2 -- This is a scheduled class for A2 in which we will finish the "Movie Presentation of the Year" and work on an optional extra credit assignment. (Details forthcoming.)

For A3 -- this is a scheduled exam date. If you did not take the AP exam, you will be required to turn in to me your take-home exam. If you did take the AP exam, you have the option of submitting the take-home semester exam. it cannot hurt your grade. We will finish the "Movie Presentation of the Year" and work on an optional extra credit assignment.

Thursday, May 16
For A2 -- Most of you, I believe, will have the World History AP exam during this time; so, we will not have anything scheduled during this period. However, if you did not take the AP exam, you will be required to turn in to me your take-home exam. If you did take the AP exam, you have the option of submitting the take-home semester exam. it cannot hurt your grade.  If you are not taking the World History AP, you will have a study hall.
